What is Psychotherapy? Part One
When a person is in conflict, much of its energy remains trapped in it. It behaves like a country at war, where young people are firing shots at the border, while industry and the means of production in that country collapsed.
If the total energy of the patient 100 and has 70% of the energy deposited in the conflict, it is only 30% of conflict-free energy or energy to live. This lack of energy, it can become symptomatologically speaking a permanent fatigue (Freud called this tiredness, fatigue psychasthenia or mind).
If we make the analogy with cancer, we know that tumors or "conflicts" are proliferating at the same time absorbing the energy of the carrier until you are finished with your life. Well, as used in cancer radiotherapy or chemotherapy for these tumors, we use the therapy to combat the psychic conflicts.
The therapeutic work is then to help the patient to be resolving these conflicts. To the extent that this goal is achieved, it will be "signing" mental peace and energy that the patient was put on them, will be released as free energy or energy conflict to life. Iran cease "hostilities" so that this new power will enable the reconstruction of destroyed.
As I mentioned in a previous tab, the sufferer is a person who is dissociated or split. To clarify this concept, try to visualize the psyche as a large iceberg, where the above water and is, represents our conscious world and is only 1 / 3 of the total. The remaining 2 / 3 are under water, are not and represent our unconscious world. For a therapist with a psychodynamic view of the mind, any person is continuously influenced by currents impinging unconscious conscious aspects, causing psychological conflicts that are expressed in the form of symptoms.
It is assumed that the therapist is an expert in "diving" in the unconscious patient, trying to find and extract all dissociated. It's like going to the search and rescue of the puzzle pieces of each, without which it is impossible to complete the picture of contradictions and conflicts that each of us.
I will take this statement as a reminder that all sessions "help" in the sense that all of them "collect pieces of the puzzle", but suddenly, in a given session "find" a "corner card" with which we set up quickly in large part of the puzzle we were working. We tend to attribute to this session of particular importance, knowing that no other sessions, such a finding would have been impossible.
Let's see this with an example: a person can be aware and therefore be perfectly "associated" or connected with how much she loves her father, but being completely unaware or "decoupled" from the resentment that he has. Suppose that the father was separated from the mother when the patient was small. This "decoupling" will generate unconscious in daily communication with the parent, some confusion and conflict that knows no explanation.
Schematically, we can define psychotherapy as "making the unconscious conscious, or associate it dissociated."
In generic form, we define psychotherapy as a process of communication between a psychotherapist and a person who requests assistance (patient), with the aim of improving the quality of life of the latter, through a change in your thinking, in their feelings or actions. We will take this definition as a starting point for describing and analyzing each of the terms mentioned in it.
Let's start with the word process. The word process means change over time. But how these changes occur? How can someone who does not know me at all, "only" with the word can make me change anything?
For the patient (for anyone), the mere fact of being heard and is therapeutic in itself. Feel your concerns are "deposited" into someone safe, which are reliable and that it is "fully charge" of them, thus freeing you from a great weight. We all experience how well we feel has been heard by someone who loves us.
If so, the first thing you ask is: Why should I go to a professional and a good friend or the parish priest for example?
As professionals, we share with the friend or the priest, the sympathetic concern (empathy) on the other, but from there we have nothing to do with them, since, as therapists, we have knowledge that these people do not have.
At this early stage of being heard outside the professional sphere, the non pejorative name "psicodiálisis." I call it because even though the person does not solve anything basic, if you download and relieved. Eschatological forgiveness for example, but it's like going to the service, deposit where it does not digest and then shot in the chain. The trouble is that a few hours, they return back discomfort and need to "settle".
When I explain what is psychotherapy to me, I usually do a comparison with acupuncture. The master acupuncturist knows which of our meridian points to insert the needles in order to redirect the energy of a particular organ. Well, as therapists use needles instead of words, as structures of meaning which are changes in the psyche of the patient.
If we said that the patient suffers from its dissociation and its history, this means that there is a blockage and therefore there is no communication between the conscious and unconscious world, with the mission of the therapist, as I said above, associate the dissociated or make the unconscious conscious.
Perhaps you can better understand this concept with a clinical example.
Some time ago I had a patient of 33 years was about to complete his college quarter. He devoted himself to study and to accumulate runs. Consulted for their continuous growing anxiety attacks.
In this case the words "magic" that made "connects with itself" were telling him he was an "eternal teenager". Note that the two words have a semantic meaning and the name, cause into his psyche a cascade of associations that bounced off his unconscious. Surely, these associations were of the type: a phase delay, fear of growing up and leaving home, fear of entering the competitive period adult world of work, and so on.
From the manifesto of his conduct, was a man worthy of admiration for their academic achievements (it was always better to earn college degrees focus on drugs for example), but your unconscious mind "knew" I was afraid to grow and to face and overcome basic stage of growth, which is called exogamy or leaving the family home.
If every teenager has "three basic tasks" that are separated from parents, living and relationships. My patient, despite his 33 years, had not yet achieved any of the three objectives.
With those words, and all therapeutic work around them, unable to connect to their resistance to change. That work was the "lever" mobilizing for subsequent changes that allowed him to accept their strengths first and then grow through the therapeutic process, getting rid of the box definitely intense anguish that had led him to consult.
If psychotherapy is well done grows with time. Why say this? Because over any therapeutic process is "seeding" the psyche of the patient, number of "keywords" that act as "seeds" that sometimes take years to germinate, but when they do, although the patient psychotherapy has finished, your psyche remembers and serve to continue on the path of life.
